At Breakthrough Case Management and Complex Care, dignity in care is not just a principle. In reality, it’s the foundation of everything we do.
This year, as we continue to champion dignity across all of our Breakthrough services, we’re proud to share that our Registered Manager, Kate Morgan, is now our organisation’s Dignity Champion, supported by our Managing Director, Victoria McDermott, as Deputy Dignity Champion. Together, they are leading a commitment that runs through every level of our organisation.
A Culture Built on Respect and Empowerment
“For us, dignity isn’t a standalone initiative. It’s actually embedded in every interaction,” says Kate.
“Every client has their own story, their own preferences, and their own goals. Our role is to listen, respect those differences, and support people to live lives that are truly their own.”
This commitment reflects the principles of the Dignity in Care 10 Point Challenge, which sets out essential standards for delivering care that respects individuality, promotes independence, and protects people’s rights. These principles include treating each person as an individual, supporting independence, listening to people’s needs, and always ensuring privacy and respect.
Leading by Example
As Dignity Champion, Kate plays a key role in embedding these values across the organisation.
“Being a Dignity Champion is about more than awareness, it’s about action,” she explains.
“It means challenging poor practice, celebrating excellence, and continually asking: ‘Are we truly delivering care in a way that honours each person’s dignity?’”
Our Managing Director, Victoria, in her role as Deputy Dignity Champion, reinforces that this is a leadership priority:
“Dignity must be championed from the top and lived out across every team. We want every colleague, client, and family member to feel confident that respect, compassion, and integrity are at the heart of what we do.”
A Shared Responsibility
At Breakthrough, dignity is not the responsibility of one individual, rather, it belongs to the whole team.
From case managers and support workers to leadership and administration, every member of staff is encouraged to uphold the 10 Point Dignity Challenge, ensuring that:
- Clients are always treated with respect and compassion
- Care is delivered in a way that maintains privacy and confidentiality
- Individuals are supported to make their own choices
- Communication is clear, inclusive, and person-centred
- Zero tolerance is shown towards discrimination or disrespect
“Dignity is reflected in the smallest moments,” Kate adds.
“A conversation where someone feels truly heard, a choice that’s respected, or care that’s delivered with genuine kindness. These are the things that define quality.”
Continuing Our Commitment
Victoria says: “By strengthening our Dignity Champion leadership and aligning our practices with the Dignity in Care framework, we are reinforcing our commitment to delivering care that not only meets standards—but exceeds them.”
“We want dignity to be felt, not just talked about,” says Kate. “That’s what makes a real difference to people’s lives.”
